Studio Exhibition: Exotic Aquatic by Erick Dunn and Erika Woolsey

May 31st – July 21st, 2019
Gallery Hours
Thurs-Sat: 10 am – 4 pm
Sun: 12 pm – 4 pm

Opening Reception
May 31st 6 pm – 8 pm

With this interactive exhibition, the Marin Art and Garden Center, along with marine biologist Erika Woolsey and artist Erick Dunn, explore the relationship between art and science while helping us learn about the beauty of, and threats to, ocean life today.

Both science and art are human attempts to understand and describe the world around us. The subjects and methods have different traditions, and the intended audiences are different, but the motivations and goals are fundamentally the same. Scientists and artists both try to show what they observe, and communicate this to others. Artists emphasize their own perceptions and imaginations in their work. Scientists focus on attempting to represent the world as it is for others to see and understand.

In Exotic Aquatic, artist Erick Dunn and scientist Erika Woolsey bring their worlds together. Erick Dunn uses light and glass to create mystical sculptures that are inspired by plants and animals living in the sea. Dr. Erika Woolsey is Director of the non-profit, “The Hydrous”. She and her team use photogrammetry and virtual reality to create “open access oceans”, providing everyone with access to the mysteries of marine environments, particularly coral reefs that are currently threatened. Both use cutting edge technology to bring you a magical experience that takes you under the ocean to explore worlds both real and imagined.

-Kate Eilertsen, Guest Curator

Be sure to try the exhibition’s virtual deep dive using VR equipment, and on July 10, join us for Coral Reefs & Manta Rays, a presentation and film by Dr. Woolsey.
