By Christopher Woods
Talk, wine reception and book sale by Book Passage
Co-sponsored by Marin Garden Club
Join us for an illustrated talk by author Christopher Woods, who traveled the world for three years seeking out contemporary gardens, and found fifty of the best for this book, published by Timber Press.
About the lecture:
“It’s amazing what you can do with a shovel”, says Peter Korn, garden genius in Sweden. Carrie Preston in the Netherlands speaks about her style, “I work in a way that I would identify as female. I don’t want control. I don’t want to dominate the space, I want to dance with it.” And the director of Pha Tad Ke botanical garden in Laos quotes, “What would garden design be without a palette of color, a sense of composition and structure, a playful line between nature and culture?”
With wit and humor, author Chris Woods describes the most arresting features in public parks in exotic locations like New Delhi and Dubai, mission-redefining botanic gardens in Chile and Australia, and the most enviable details of lavish private estates and gemlike city yards. Throughout, he reveals the fascinating people, plants, and stories that make these gardens so lust-worthy.
About the book:
A steep hillside garden in Singapore. A garden defined by shape and light in Marrakech. A haunting tree museum in Switzerland. A formal garden of native plants in New Zealand. These are just a few of the outstanding gardens featured in Gardenlust, a sumptuous exploration of the world’s best new gardens. Intrepid plant expert Christopher Woods explores the best modern gardens from around the world, introducing us to private and public spaces that offer unparalleled innovation and beauty. Traveling from the Americas and Europe to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, from Asia to Australia and New Zealand, readers will discover the people and plants that bring these gardens to life and the stories that make them memorable. Featuring fifty gardens and packed with hundreds of stunning photographs, Gardenlust is a remarkable and unforgettable botanical tour.
About the author:
Chris Woods was born in London, England but has lived in the United States since 1981. He has worked in the garden world as gardener, director and designer for 45 years. He is best-known for his work at Chanticleer, a “pleasure garden” in Wayne, PA, where he worked for 20 years.
After Chanticleer, he became vice president for horticulture at the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden. He was director of the VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver, Canada, and executive director of the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden. In 2012, he was lured back east by The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and appointed director of its private estate and garden, Meadowbrook Farm. Being somewhat restless and increasingly unemployable, he decided to stop managing gardens and decided to travel the world looking at both constructed and wild landscapes.
He currently lives in California and one or two other places.
