A little peer pressure from author Johanna Silver, whose new book offers grow-how for cannabis.
Disappointed that Johanna Silver wasn’t able to join us for a talk featuring her new book “Growing Weed in the Garden”? Cheer up, she’s here with a special message telling you more about this first-of-its-kind guide to cannabis cultivation from a horticultural perspective. You’ll definitely be inspired to branch out as a gardener with Johanna’s encouragement!
On Monday, April 20, Bay Area author Johanna Silver was scheduled to talk with us about her new book, Growing Weed in the Garden: A No-Fuss, Seed-to-Stash Guide to Outdoor Cannabis Cultivation. “4:20” is synonymous with the time of day to enjoy cannabis, and April 20 quickly became a counterculture holiday; but, now that cannabis is legal, you can openly grow your very own crop and celebrate it anytime!
From seed to stash, Johanna Silver’s no-fuss guide is the definitive book for learning how to cultivate cannabis outdoors. Former Gardening Editor for Sunset magazine, Johanna opens her book by admitting she is not a stoner. After getting laid off from her magazine job, she landed a writing gig with a friend from the San Francisco Chronicle. Her first article assignment was to grow weed in her back yard and document it; and this is how her appreciation began.
Apparently, Cannabis sativa thrives in California sunshine. “Weed is unlike anything I’ve ever grown,” she writes, “not because it’s so complicated, but because it’s fun — the smells are out of this world, it’s sticky as can be, and it grows faster than all get-out. It’s not the hardest thing you can grow. Spoiler alert: It’s called weed for a reason.”
Johanna includes grower profiles of folks around the country who are growing their own plants, and Q&A’s from a regional perspective. She dedicates a chapter to harvesting, drying, curing and trimming. You’ll also find ideas for how to use the fruits of your labor, from how to roll a joint, making tinctures, oils and balms, beautifully illustrated by Bay Area photographer Rachel Weill.
We can’t think of better time to start your own garden and why not include some weed too? We’re stoked to bring Johanna to MAGC sometime in the fall – so, stay tuned!
